Vintage: The season began very dry (declared drought). We had a few light rain events but overall weather from bud break to bloom was terrific with daytime highs averaging in the mid 70’s. Fruit set was above average across the board and rainfall from bloom to veraison was below average. In mid July as we approached harvests we got heavy rains from Tropical Storm Celia and Hurricane Madeline. Gauges showed 12" from March through August 2016. Aside from late rainfall the 2016 vintage was under fantastic conditions and the years wines show interest and intensity.
Vinification: Specific rows are harvested into separate lots based on physiological ripeness. Each is treated individually based on their strengths and personality and what they may ultimately bring to the composite blend. Each lot 100% destemmed into stainless steel fermenters. A 6 day cold-soak, followed by 15 days of fermentation and 28 days of post-fermentation maceration. Extraction methods determined by daily tastings including tradition punch downs and pump-overs. 100% destemmed, 30% new oak , 100% MLF complete, 11 months aging in stainless with MOX, bottled unfiltered and un-fined.
Rare—without question. This handcrafted wine carries the essence of a single mountain that pushes like a miracle from the center of the Pacific Ocean. Its layers of flavor, its uniqueness and its complexities are designed by Haleakala.
Malbec is a beast, this is like getting to know the raw and sensitive side of that beast. All knotty and growing almost rambunctiously, these unruly looking vines are a constant surprise. As it’s often said, looks can be deceiving… sometimes you’ll find the oddest, craziest looking vines result in the most remarkable wines.
I come from a pedigree of big wines, husky and colorful, but that's just not me... well maybe the colorful part! As a family outcast I try to be as unique and different as possible. My favorite thing to do is prove to people that don't like my siblings that we're not all the same. Drink me now or sometime within the next 10 years, longer if you have nice conditions for me to hang out in, who knows how interesting I'll become as I grow old! Ideally drinking me within 2 to 3 years would be great, but you can always call my makers up and ask how I’m doing at the moment.
